Claude is a strong writer and a careful reader, which makes it a natural partner for running a WordPress site. Most of the work on a site is exactly that: writing, editing, reviewing and keeping things tidy. The friction is that Claude lives in one tab and your WordPress admin lives in another, and you're the one carrying text between them.

When you connect your site to Claude, that friction goes away. Claude can read your existing posts before it drafts a new one, so it matches your tone. It can create the draft directly in WordPress. It can tell you which comments are waiting for moderation, check which plugins need updating, and update a page's text when your opening hours change. Every change shows a preview first.

Here's how to set it up, and how to get the most out of it.

What you'll be able to do

Once connected, you can ask Claude things like:

  • "Summarise the last ten posts on my blog and suggest three topics I haven't covered."
  • "Draft a post about our autumn opening hours in the same style as my recent posts, and save it as a draft."
  • "Which comments are waiting for approval? Approve the genuine ones and mark the spam."
  • "Update the 'Contact' page so the phone number reads +1 555 0100."
  • "Which plugins are active, and are any of them out of date?"
  • "Run a site health check and explain anything that needs attention."

Behind each request is a tool, such as list posts, create post, moderate comment, update page or site health, that you switched on when you built your plugin.

What you need

  • A WordPress site where you're an administrator. WordPress 5.6 or later includes Application Passwords, which the connection uses.
  • A Claude account that can add custom connectors.
  • About five minutes.

If your site also runs WooCommerce, the same setup gives Claude access to your store tools too, for example orders, products and coupons. See how to connect WooCommerce to ChatGPT; the steps are the same up to the point where you add the plugin to your AI app.

Step 1: Enter your site and approve access

Go to aiplugingenerator.com, enter your website address, and sign in. We detect that your site runs WordPress.

You're then sent to your own WordPress admin, to the built-in screen for approving an application. WordPress creates an Application Password for this connection. It's a separate credential from your login, and you can see and revoke it any time under Users → Profile → Application Passwords.

We never see or store your WordPress login password. The application password is encrypted at rest and only used to carry out requests made through your plugin.

Step 2: Choose what Claude can do

You'll see every available tool, marked Read or Write. For a content-focused WordPress site, a sensible starting set is:

Read (on by default)

  • List posts, pages, categories and tags
  • Get a post or page with its content
  • List comments, media, menus and users
  • Site settings, active theme, plugin list, site health

Write (switch on what you need)

  • Create post (save as draft) and update post
  • Update page
  • Moderate comment
  • Create category and tag

Leave plugin installation, user management and settings changes off unless you have a clear reason to use them. Tools you don't tick aren't built into your plugin at all.

Step 3: Generate the plugin

Name your plugin, review the short description, and click Generate. Your plugin is built and hosted in under a minute, at an address like your-site.aiplugingenerator.com/mcp. You can move it to your own domain later.

Step 4: Add it to Claude

Open your plugin's Install tab and copy the plugin address. Then, in Claude:

  1. Open Settings → Connectors.
  2. Choose Add custom connector.
  3. Give it your site's name and paste the plugin address.
  4. Click Connect. Claude opens your plugin's sign-in page.
  5. Paste the one-time connection code from your Install tab and confirm.

Your site now appears in Claude's list of connectors. In any conversation, open the tools menu and make sure it's enabled.

If you want everyone with a Claude account to be able to find and install your connector, you can also submit it to Claude's directory. We prepare every field for you; see how to list your connector in the Claude directory.

Step 5: Work the way you already work

Writing and editing

Claude does its best writing with context. Ask it to read before it writes:

"Read my five most recent posts. Then draft a 700-word post about choosing the right water pump for a small farm, in the same voice, with a short FAQ at the end. Save it as a draft."

Claude calls list posts, reads them, writes the draft, and then calls create post. You see a preview with the title, excerpt and status (draft), and confirm. The post appears in WordPress as a draft for you to review, add images to and publish.

Keeping pages accurate

Small factual edits are where the connection saves the most time:

"On the 'About' page, change 'since 2015' to 'since 2014'."

Claude fetches the page, makes the edit, and shows you a preview of the change before saving.

Comment moderation

"Show me comments waiting for approval. Approve the ones that are genuine questions and mark obvious spam as spam."

You get a list with Claude's suggestion for each comment, and nothing is changed until you confirm.

Site upkeep

"Give me a quick health check: WordPress version, active theme, plugins that need updates, and anything in site health I should fix this week."

These are read-only tools, so Claude can answer without asking for confirmation.

Keeping it safe

Giving an assistant access to your site should feel boring, in a good way. That comes from a few rules that apply to every plugin:

  • Only the tools you ticked exist. Claude can't call a tool you didn't include.
  • Changes come back as a preview first. Updates, deletions and settings changes need your confirmation in the chat.
  • Everything is logged. The Activity tab shows each call, which AI app made it, what it touched and the outcome.
  • You can cut it off in one click. Revoke the Application Password in WordPress and the plugin can no longer reach your site.

For teams, you can also give editors and assistants their own access, limited to specific tools, without handing out admin. See how to give your team AI access without giving away admin.

Tips for better results

  • Be specific about the target. "The 'Pricing' page" or "post ID 812" beats "that page from last week".
  • Ask for drafts, then publish yourself. It keeps a human checkpoint on anything public.
  • Give Claude your style guide. Paste it once at the start of a project, or put it in a page and ask Claude to read it first.
  • Chain read then write. "Find X, show me, then change it" gives you a natural review step.
