How to connect your WooCommerce store to ChatGPT, step by step

Connect WooCommerce to ChatGPT in about five minutes. Check orders, update stock and create coupons by asking, with every change previewed before it happens.

Most store owners already have ChatGPT open in another tab. They ask it to write product descriptions, draft emails to customers, or explain a shipping rule. Then they switch back to WooCommerce and do the actual work by hand: open the orders screen, filter by status, click into each one, copy a number, update a field.

Connecting your store to ChatGPT removes that switch. Instead of describing your store to ChatGPT, you let it look. "Which orders from this week are still unpaid?" gets a real answer from your real store, and "Set the stock of the blue mug to 30" actually changes the number, after you confirm it.

This guide walks through the whole setup with AI Plugin Generator, from typing in your address to asking your first question. No code, no server, no WordPress plugin to configure.

What "connecting WooCommerce to ChatGPT" actually means

ChatGPT can't log in to your WordPress admin, and you wouldn't want it to. What it can do is talk to an app: a small service that offers ChatGPT a list of clearly defined actions, such as "list orders", "get a product", or "update stock", and carries them out on your behalf.

The technical name for that service is an MCP server (Model Context Protocol). You don't need to know how it works to use it, but if you're curious, we wrote a plain-English explainer on MCP.

AI Plugin Generator builds and hosts that app for you. It talks to your store through WooCommerce's own REST API, using keys you approve in your own admin, and exposes only the actions you choose.

Before you start

You need three things:

  1. A WooCommerce store on a WordPress site you can log in to as an administrator.
  2. A ChatGPT account. Custom apps are available on paid plans; depending on your plan, you may need to turn on developer mode in ChatGPT's settings to add your own app.
  3. About five minutes.

Your store's REST API must be reachable. It is on almost every WooCommerce store by default. If a security plugin blocks /wp-json/, we'll tell you during setup, and you can allow it there.

Step 1: Enter your website

Go to aiplugingenerator.com and type your store's address, for example yourstore.com. We check your site and detect that it runs WordPress with WooCommerce. You'll see your store's name and icon so you know we found the right site.

If you aren't signed in yet, you'll be asked to sign in with Google or with an email and password. Creating an account is free; you only pay when you add a site.

Step 2: Approve access in your own admin

Next you're sent to a screen on your own store, the standard WooCommerce "authorize app" page that every WooCommerce integration uses. It shows exactly what is being requested: read access, or read and write access. Click Approve.

That's the whole connection. A few things worth knowing:

  • We never see your WordPress password. WooCommerce creates a dedicated API key for this connection.
  • The key is encrypted before it's stored, and it's only decrypted to carry out a request you or your plugin makes.
  • You can revoke it any time from WooCommerce → Settings → Advanced → REST API. Delete the key and the plugin stops instantly.

Step 3: Pick the tools

Now you see the full list of tools, grouped by area: orders, products, customers, coupons, reports, settings, marketing and more. Each tool is marked Read or Write.

  • Read tools are on by default. They let ChatGPT look things up: list orders, view a customer, get your top products this month, read your sales summary.
  • Write tools are off until you switch them on. They let ChatGPT change things: update stock, change an order's status, create a coupon, issue a refund.

Start with read tools. Use them for a week, see how you like asking questions, then switch on the specific write tools you want. Tools you leave off are not built into your plugin at all, so ChatGPT can't call them even if asked to.

There's a "select all" for each column if you want everything. For a typical store, a good starting set is orders, products, customers and the reports, all read-only, plus update stock and add order note as your first write tools.

Step 4: Generate your plugin

Give your plugin a name (we suggest one based on your store), check the short description we draft for you, and click Generate. In under a minute your plugin is built and running at its own web address, such as your-store.aiplugingenerator.com/mcp.

You can also host it on your own subdomain or your own site instead. You can change that later without rebuilding anything by hand.

Step 5: Add it to ChatGPT

Open your plugin's Install tab. It shows the plugin's address and a one-time connection code.

In ChatGPT:

  1. Open Settings and find the apps or connectors section. If you don't see an option to add your own app, turn on developer mode there first.
  2. Choose to create a new app, give it your store's name, and paste your plugin's address.
  3. ChatGPT opens your plugin's sign-in page. Paste the one-time connection code from the Install tab and confirm.

That's it. ChatGPT's menu names change from time to time, so if something looks different, the Install tab always has the current steps with screenshots.

Step 6: Ask your first questions

Start a new chat, make sure your app is enabled for the conversation, and try:

  • "How many orders did I get yesterday, and how much revenue?"
  • "List orders that are still processing, oldest first."
  • "Which products have fewer than 5 in stock?"
  • "Who are my top 10 customers this year?"

ChatGPT calls the matching tool, gets the data from your store, and answers in plain language. You can follow up naturally: "Email-style summary of those, please", or "Which of those customers ordered more than once?"

What happens when ChatGPT changes something

When you ask for a change, for example "Mark order 1042 as completed and add a note saying it shipped with DHL", the plugin doesn't act straight away. It returns a preview: the order, its current status, the new status and the note. ChatGPT shows you that preview and asks you to confirm. Only after you say yes does the change happen.

Riskier actions such as refunds, deletions and settings changes always work this way. Every call, read or write, is recorded in your plugin's Activity tab with the tool, the AI app that made it, what it touched and the outcome.

Troubleshooting

"We couldn't reach your site." Your host or a security plugin may be blocking the WooCommerce API. Allow /wp-json/wc/ in your firewall or security plugin, then click check again.

ChatGPT says the app isn't available. Make sure the app is switched on for the conversation and that your plan supports custom apps. Developer mode may need to be enabled.

The sign-in code expired. Codes are short-lived on purpose. Generate a new one from the Install tab and try again.

You want to remove access. Delete the API key in WooCommerce → Settings → Advanced → REST API, or delete the plugin from its Settings tab. Either one stops it immediately.

What it costs

AI Plugin Generator is $20 a month for up to 5 sites, with every tool, hosting and team access included. You can pay through PayPal in 24 currencies and cancel any time. See pricing for details.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to install a WordPress plugin?

No. The connection uses WooCommerce's built-in REST API and its standard "authorize app" screen. You only install a small connector plugin if you choose to host your AI plugin on your own site's address.

Can ChatGPT change my store without asking?

Only through the write tools you switch on, and changes come back as a preview first. Refunds, deletions and settings changes always need your confirmation in the chat.

Does this work with Claude and Gemini too?

Yes. The same plugin works with ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Meta AI. See how to manage your WordPress site from Claude.

What happens to my plugin if I stop paying?

Your plugin pauses. Nothing is deleted, and it comes back as soon as you renew.
